Most people feel worried or depressed at some point in their lives. These feelings may be triggered by life events such as illness, relationship issues or the loss of someone close.
However, sometimes it's not easy to pinpoint a particular event that has contributed to these difficulties. While friends, family and/or partners can be helpful, it can be useful to talk through your problems with a neutral and objective person in confidence.
To help in these situations, Positive East can offer a confidential one-to-one Counselling and Psychotherapy service to help you to explore the different thoughts, feelings and behaviours that you may be experiencing.
The service is free for people living in or receiving clinical care in East London (Barking & Dagenham; City of London; Hackney; Havering; Newham; Redbridge; Tower Hamlets; Waltham Forest).
What happens in the sessions?
In the first few sessions, the therapist will talk to you about the problems you have been having, how they started and how you are dealing with them. This will help the therapist to try and understand how your problems are affecting you.
As the sessions progress, the therapist will explore with you some of the ideas around how different problems arise and look at different ways of coping with difficulties.
How long does the therapy take ?
The number of sessions will depend on the nature of your problem and will be discussed with you during the initial meetings.
For some, one session may be enough; while others may need several sessions.
If during the counselling sessions, a longer term or more specialist approach is identified as being needed, the therapist will help you contact and access specialised services from within the Voluntary sector and Health Service.
We do not offer a drop-in service. Appointments must be made between the therapist and client. Sessions will usually last for 50 - 60 minutes, and on a flexible basis - weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis depending on the requirement.
Is Counselling confidential?
Counselling and psychotherapy sessions are covered under Positive East confidential guidelines.
