Positive East provides a wide range of social and support groups for a variety of different communities. For all of our groups, we suggest that you come along for an introductory informal chat before attending your first group.

Course Details

If you'd like information regarding the course, call Positive East Stepney Centre on 020 7791 2855 and we'll send you details, or send us an email and we will forward you the course details.

When sessions are being held, WoT meets on Thursdays from 6.30pm - 9.00pm and it gives the opportunity of displaying your work as part of a final showcase/exhibition at the end of the session.

Location of the workshops is at Positive East Stepney Centre, 159 Mile End Road, London E1 4AQ.
  
All workshops are FREE. Some workshops, though, will involve extra costs for materials, etc, so please check the info on each workshop for more details.

This is just a small selection of our previous workshops over the years.

Winter 2007 Workshops:

Session One will run from 11th October to 1st November;
Session Two
will run from 8th November to 29th November.

As with previous workshops, there will be a final exhibition and showcase, held at Positive East Gallery from 13th to 20th December.

Session One:
  • Making Up Stories with Dylan Stone.
    Drawing/Writing/Sculpting Workshop.
    Our stories are the beginning of art. Develop your stories and play with fictionalized accounts of real life events through talking, writing, drawing and the making of objects. Come with your stories as gifts to others and be inspired
    Dylan Stone completed his BA Fine Arts in Barcelona and did his MA in New York.

  • Stage Hands with Evan Placey.
    Writing for Theatre Workshop.
    We all have a story to tell. This is your chance to put it on the page and see how it works on its feet! Explore aspects of playwriting and learn tools to make your stories come to life. Your short play will be performed by professional actors.

    Evan Placey is a playwright, director, screenwriter and poet. his plays have been performed in Toronto, Montreal, Edinburgh and London.

Session Two:

  • Potty-mouth Poetry with Andra Simons.
    Performing Poetry Workshop.
    This Workshop's for all those closeted and not-so-closeted poets. Spend 4 intense weeks on one of your poems, building it up, memorising it and delivering a fierce, filthy (or vanilla) performance!
    Andra Simons is a writer, director and actor. He received the Bermuda Gold Award and Golden Inkwell for his poetry and plays.
  • Picturing Desire with Douglas Nicolson.
    Photography Workshop.
    A Workshop about photographs and their personal meanings. Explore the stories we construct when we try to make sense of the personal and public spaces we inhabit. Please bring a camera. No experience necessary.

    Douglas Nicolson works in digital print and moving image. He has made art works in prisons, in a Romanian homeless shelter, in Kenya and London.

Summer 2007 Workshops:

Start Acting Out: Exploring Monologues with Andra Simons

Oozing dramatic flair or wish you did? Whether you want to create your own short drama or just be the one who can muster a Tennessee Williams monologue in the midst of a dying party, this workshop will show you how to uncover your own and a character's magic. A course in scene study and monologues, we'll use dram exercises and games to generate creative ideas, and explore interaction between the self and others through contemporary and classical texts. Bring along enthusiasm and a willingness to listen as we help each other find the truth in our dramatic moments. No experience necessary.

It's All About Me: Exploring Self-Portraits with George Chakravarthi

What's a self-portrait? Self-expression or self-indulgence? This mixed-media workshop explores image, self-image and portraiture through playful fun and practical approach to reach a deeper understanding of what it takes to make art on a theme of the Self. Using photography, collage, drawing text and other media, you'll be encouraged to create work that is as confessional or enigmatic as you like. Suggestions and strategies to help achieve personal vision will be given through exercises, group discussion and one-to-one. No experience necessary.

At the end of the Workshop session a showcase is held which exhibits the work done.
The summer exhibition - Look at Me! Look at Me! - provided a showcase for the Self Portrait workshop, along with performances on the opening night from the monologue course, with over 50 people attending on the first night.


Queer in the Frame with Topher Campbell

An intensive workshop were participants will be required to write, shoot, edit and star in a short digital video drama. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about core aspects of creating a good quality visual story and an introduction to low budget film making. If you are imaginative, courageous and a team player or just want to have fun this is the course for you.

Topher is a television and film director. His credits include Doctors for BBC1 and his short films have been shown in Lesbian and Gay film Festivals worldwide.


Fully Exposed with Ajamu

An practical, playful workshop exploring the role of images in the lives of gay and bisexual men. Participants will expand their skills in photographic image creating and develop their own ideas. The sessions will include working with conventional and digital cameras, studio and lighting apparatus, portraiture, self-portraits and nudes.

Ajamu is a fine art photographer and community activist who has shown work in galleries, museums and alternative spaces around the world


Men Writing Themselves with Royce Mahawette

An informal workshop that will encourage participants to explore ways of writing their masculinity. Sessions will work on initiating the writing process to work on different genres- the diary, journaling, confessional, short stories and genre fiction. The workshop is open to new writers who are unsure of themselves as well as to experienced writers who want to take their work in new directions.

Royce is a lecturer in Cultural Studies and English Literature, he writes for the Times literary supplement and has worked with various men's groups and Spread the Word


Photography Workshop for Black Men with Ajamu

A practical, playful, and serious photographic workshop exploring the role of images in the lives of black gay and bi men. You will develop a wide variety of skills in photographic image creating, be encouraged to develop your own personal ideas/projects, explore visual language around black male identity, sexuality and community, and widen your ways of looking. No experience necessary, only an interest in photography. Please bring your own camera. Participants will be expected to cover their own printing and developing costs.This workshop is run in partnership with The Terrence Higgins Trust.

Ajamu, a fine art photographer and cultural activist, has shown his work in galleries, museums and alternative spaces around the world. Through experimentation and risk-taking, his intention in photography, and recently with video, is to extend, transgress and push contemporary theoretical debates on Identities, the body, race, genders, sexualities and pleasures.


Playing with Clay with John Dawson

Clay is an extremely tactile medium in which you can loose yourself and be surprised by your own creativity. In this practical workshop, you will learn to make some simple objects using various skills taught over a period of 8 weeks in an informal and friendly group. Create like you have never created before! No experience necessary.

John studied ceramics at Goldsmiths' College and has over the years gained an international following giving workshops and exhibitions in various parts of the world. John is also a member of the Crafts Potters Association where you can see his work.


Queer Pitch: Singing and Song Writing with Steve Anthony

Many of the great songwriters have been queer. Now it's your chance to learn some of the tricks of the trade. In this hands-on workshop for aspiring and more seasoned singers, songwriters and lyricists, you'll learn about hooks, lifts and bridges, mood, tone, structure, and how to make your songs ring true. There will be plenty of scope to try out ideas and get constructive feedback. Some musical and/or lyrical ability is needed. A keyboard will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring their own guitars, etc.

Steve is a singer, songwriter, poet and guitarist with many years experience in writing, recording and performing songs. He has run similar workshops at Goldsmiths College and Stratford Circus, amongst other places. He is a solo performer and also part of the 'nu-jazzy' duo Anima Rising.
